Everything Must Go
04:24
|
|||
Well I ducked inside the doorway,
of the Diamond Discount store,
and a sign placed in the window,
said 'Everything Must Go'
So I bummed it down to St Johns,
and I waited on the shore,
'till the fog horn sang a low song,
called 'Everything Must Go'
Then a ship came cross the water,
sailed nine times round the bay,
she was called 'The Merchant's Daughter'
and she carried me away
but the captain loved his silver,
and the bosun loved his blade,
but all of us that sailed her,
there was nothing to be gained
and everything must go
and everything must go
but she foundered off of Kingston
in a ragin' force ten gale,
so we burned her to her waistline,
as they herded us to gaol,
and they whupped us for our boldness
and they beat us for our pride,
but they feared us for the coldness,
that we'd locked away inside,
where everything must go,
where everything must go,
now the moneyed have their borders,
to maintain a flawless face,
and the soldiers have their orders,
for to keep us in our place,
when I made it back to St Johns.
I stood upon the shore,
and I sang the fog horn's low song
'Everything Must Go'
and everything must go..
everything must go..
everything must go..
everything must go..

Long Way to Buffalo
03:59
|
|||
Joe, everybody says
that the wheel has turned again
and we have had our chance
And so, we go our separate ways
and head on down the road
in search of better things
But its a long way to Buffalo
and you know what that means
that some things never let you go
and they find you in your dreams
and they find you in your dreams
Joe, they've covered up the stars
and sterlised the bars
were we once sang the blues
And so with little to commend
We slipped out near the end
and asked to be excused
And everything is dimmer now
Despite the frozen glare
But Ill look for you in the lonely crowd
And I hope to find you there
And I hope to find you there
and if the old world's just beyond
the streets where were we kings
then let this train just carry on
and I will grab my things
and join you in the rain
Joe, the spirits that we knew
were poisoned by the truth
that we could not deny
And though we laughed against the chill
We couldn't the pay the bill
And so we had to fly
But its a long way to Buffalo
and you know what that means
that some things never let you go
and they find you in your dreams
and they find you in your dreams

Great Bear
04:55
|
|||
I'm hangin' on here half-frozen
In case you didn't know
And I can see the Winter's chosen
His very first flakes of snow
There's a small town that's dyin'
with a river round it curled
There's a black bird flyin'
Across the wild dark world
Well I may not know just where I'm bound
Or even when I'm home again
But bless my soul I can hear that sound
of the bold Atlantic wind
There's headlights on the hillside
And not much else for miles
The churchyard chimed at midnight
And a pebble scraped the tiles
well nothin' lasts for ever
Least nothin' worth your tears
but I wished for somethin' better
to carry you down the years
well I know I never may gain the time
just to rest and make amends
but I swear I can almost taste the brine
of the bold Atlantic wind
Well I may not know just where I'm bound
Or even when I'm home again
But bless my soul I can hear the sound
of the bold Atlantic wind
of the bold Atlantic wind

I went up to the mountain high,
and stole the stars from a crow black sky,
but I returned on a wheel of fire,
and I found nothing changed
I rode out to the high frontier,
and spoke some words that I felt sincere,
now everybody keeps on comin' round here,
sayin' "Where have you been?" and "Can I shake your hand?"
I could never work out,
what they wanted to know.
they would and push and shout,
sayin' "where did you go?"
"..in those moments alone?"
I went down to the road tonight,
the desert bathed in pale moonlight,
and for a moment, well it looked just like,
a tranquil place I'd known,
many summers ago,
I could never work out,
what they wanted from me,
some secret no doubt,
only I could reveal,
"tell me how did it feel?"
now all the world is hungry,
for things that I cannot revere,
but I remember when they,
held aloft that engineer
I went down to the Spend and Save,
the heavens opened like judgement day,
their eyes were fixed on the bright displays,
and they did not hear the thunder,
and they did not stop to wonder,
I could never work out,
what they wanted to know.
they would and push and shout,
sayin' "where did you go?",
"and what were you shown?",
"..in those moments alone?"

Burn Down Another Day
03:28
|
|||
time, time, time, take your toll on me
love and life, raise me up and set me free
my heart is like an ocean, you can rock upon my waves
my head is like a prairie, room enough for you to range
I'm getting ready now to burn down another day
stars so bright, let them fall on me
broken night, toss me into the deep blue sea
you know my life is like a highway, heaven knows where it may end
and my love is like a freight train, comin' around the bend
and every single day, I'll burn it down and start again
And all I want, is what I have right now
and I know that wasn't always true
and all I need is the life I made somehow
with you
wounded pride turn your back on me
words like knives, will not injure me
my mouth is like a river, and it will not be contained
and my tongue is just a meadow waiting for the rain
one day the world will burn me down and start again
time, time, time, take your toll on me
love and life, raise me up and set me free
my heart is like and ocean, you can rock upon my waves
my head is like a prairie, room enough for you to range
I'm getting ready now to burn down another day
I'm getting ready now to burn down another day

Geronimo
04:45
|
|||
Well I stepped down from the train,
in the dusty evening air,
and the sun slides through the railing,
like he didn't pay the fare
And I left my coat behind,
and my briefcase on the chair,
and someone's callin' after me,
but I'm too far gone to care
I guess I'm rollin' home,
I'm bein' blown along,
by all those things,
I turned my back upon
but I've been through it all,
and I stumbled but I did not fall,
and the higher I rose,
the more that I felt small
tossed my phone away,
started again today.
well I pushed off from the shore,
in a bloddy mary dawn,
and the wind crouched down beside me,
and it gently, led me on,
and no-one saw me go,
but the dyin' all around,
ans the cannons roared about me,
but I didn't hear a sound
I guess I'm goin' home,
I'm being blown along,
by all those things I once frowned upon,
but I've been through it all,
and I stumbled but I did not fall,
and the higher I rose,
the more that I felt small
tossed my name away,
started again today.

Judas Iscariot's Blues
03:31
|
|||
Every little raindrop knows your name,
everybody thinks I died of shame,
well I'm satisfied to take the blame,
and the world you left, is just the same.
Even when they took you down,
I turned my back and headed into town,
and I found myself a place to drown,
drank all that money down.
Well I'll admit, I always wanted more,
the malcontent starin' back from the shore,
you singin' "I am the light,
I am the way"
"but we deserve better..."
is all I could say,
is all that I could say.
Every little fool upon his knees,
prayin' for someone to appease,
caught between you and the pharisees,
with nowhere to run to now.
Every face wonderin',
how to free themselves of sin,
well they didn't need your suffering
they had more than enough to go round.
Well I'll admit, I always wanted more,
the malcontent starin' back from the shore,
you singin' "I am the light,
I am the way"
"but we deserve better..."
is all I could say,
is all that I could say

The Road To Galilee
03:42
|
|||
When I was a soldier on the Road to Galilee,
The fire in my heart was lit.
I struck out for the border and I made it to the sea,
And stole aboard a merchant ship
With a heart that can't be loaned,
You must find your own way home.
So I became a salesman for an Italian company,
And every deal was lined with gilt,
It took me lots of places and they rewarded me,
And a city on the hill was built.
Where the people bowed their heads,
And we pulled those secret threads
Then I was a publisher of ancient history,
With all the truth that's fit to print,
I left the priests to argue over the veracity
While the money that we made was spent.
With a story to be told,
And a promise to be sold
And the angry world below,
And the angry world below.
Now I'm just a joker with a faded memory,
And everything is cracked and split,
But once I was a soldier on the road to Galilee,
And the fire in my heart was lit.

Astronomy
03:39
|
|||
Got no whiskey,
To keep me warm,
Just the stars high above me,
Got no evil,
That can do me harm,
And the sun won't deny me,
A diamond river,
Above my head,
In the sparkling black valley
of night time
of the night time
The curlew's calling,
On the tawny owl,
"Give up your grieving",
She sings a story,
of a silver plough,
thats forever cleaving,
A furrow,
That is sowed somehow,
With the fragments of stars
for the night time
for the night time
where the planets are blazing,
and the heavens are wide,
and morning lies waiting,
the awakening bride
of the night time
of the night time X2.
raise my hand up,
to touch the sky ,
the breeze through my fingers,
arcturus,
still riding high,
on the that is turning,
the night time
the night time

Tryin' Too Hard To Snow
04:12
|
|||
well the west wind he may blow
and pound upon my door
but he's tryin' too hard to snow
and I'm not taken in
and the moon may raise his eye
but it aint no word of lie
cross my heart and hope to die
that I'm not fakin' it
and you can call my bluff
if that ain't enough
but I'm still in love
with you
and the sun can pull that face
like he's ever hung around this place
but he slunk off in disgrace
when he heard that hoot owl sing
And the frost can kiss my ass
if he thinks the moments passed
cos some hearts are built to last
no matter what the winter brings
and you can call my bluff
if that ain't enough
but I'm still in love
with you
well the stars are no-ones fool
and their gaze is long and cool
but they would not be so cruel
to get in the way of you
I can wait here in the cold
I can have and I can hold
and love will not grow old
even if I seem to
and you can call my bluff
if that ain't enough
but I'm still in love
with you
and you can call my bluff
if that ain't enough
but I'm still in love
with you
